For the responsible catching and handling of predatory fish such as pike, zander, and perch, the right materials are essential to minimize damage to the fish (such as the slime layer or fins).
1. Predator fishing nets (Landing nets)
Predator fishing nets differ from ordinary fishing nets due to their specific dimensions and material.
Material (Rubber coating):
The most important feature of a modern predator fishing net is the rubber coating over the mesh. This has three major advantages:
Fish-safe: It does not damage the vulnerable slime layer of the predatory fish.
Odor: The material does not absorb fish odor or slime, preventing the net from smelling.
Ease of use: Treble hooks and lure hooks are less likely to get tangled in the net, which is often a major problem with traditional knot nets. Size and Shape: Predator fishing nets often feature a large, deep net (sometimes up to 100-140 cm wide for large pike) to fully support the fish.
Handle Type: There are fixed handles for boat fishing and extendable or collapsible handles for roving anglers along the bank.
2. Unhooking Mats:
An unhooking mat serves as a soft, protective surface when you remove the fish from the water to remove the hook or take a photo.
Protection of the slime layer: Predator fish have very sensitive skin.
An unhooking mat prevents the fish from coming into contact with rough surfaces such as grass, sand, or stones, which can cause infections.
Measuring Function: Many predator fishing mats are equipped with an integrated measuring tape (up to 130 or 140 cm), allowing you to measure the fish immediately while it lies safely on the mat. Compactness: For predator anglers who do a lot of walking (stalking), there are special rollable or foldable mats that are lightweight and can easily be attached to a bag.
Extra options: Some mats have an extra knee pad, so that the angler keeps their knees dry while unhooking on a damp surface.
Important tip:
Always wet the unhooking mat and the net before the fish comes into contact with them. This prevents the dry mat from pulling the slime layer off the fish.
